The special preparation T3 contains as an active ingredient synthetically prepared liothyronine (L-triiodothyronine, hormone of the thyroid gland), in microcrystalline form of the sodium salt. The physiological and pharmacological action of the drug is completely identical to the action of L-triiodothyronine of the thyroid gland.

L-triiodothyronine (T3-liothyronine) is a thyroid hormone that is normally synthesized and secreted by the thyroid gland in much smaller amounts than L-tetraiodothyronine (T4, levothyroxine, L-thyroxine). The largest amount of T3 comes from the periphery from monodeiodination of T4 at the 5-position of the outer ring of the iodothyronine core. The hormone ultimately delivered and used by the tissues is mainly T3.
